Hope Steffey a Woman Falsely Convicted

Heres some more info about this case, this is a Cut & Paste I have been posting:

This is the BCI report that Agent Christy S. Palmer sent to John D. Ferrero, Prosecuting Attorney Stark County Ohio.
Dated April 16, 2008 BCI Case #: SI-76-08-14-0147

This is part of page 3

http://s2.photobucket.com/albums/y39/Zemo999/?action=view&current=BCI-Re…

Sheriff Swanson has ALWAYS maintained that Steffey was ASKED & REFUSED to remove her cloths.
But here’s the BCI’s OWN REPORT that PROVES this is a LIE!
And then they try to explain away their first lie with another lie, about why it was done this way without asking Steffey to do it voluntarily.
They are trying to say that Steffey was resisting enough that EIGHT people couldn’t take the chance of ASKING her to remove her cloths, or EVEN TELL HER WHAT WAS GOING ON!!!
What a crock!!

I did NOT see any resisting in the video, I saw eight cops parading her to the cell, with her in cuffs.

In fact EVERY video I have seen she is in cuffs!
And the ONLY times I have seen her react to the cops is after they have assaulted her or in the process of stripping her naked.

But apparently catching the sheriff’s dept in a lie isn’t a big deal to our “independent” BCI investigator, Christy Palmer, who seems ready to accept ANY excuse the sheriff’s dept wants to use.

The report also goes on to say that they lowered Steffey in a slow controlled manner to the floor. Except that Steffey says she was thrown to the floor.
She also told her husband in a phone call that she thought the cops had broken her nose.
And she was treated by the nurse for the injury.
And in page 4 of this report Christy Palmer even states that Steffey reported that her nose was making “crunching noises”.

So I guess this is proof of a second LIE! (Or third)

And still Christy Palmer, the “independent investigator” doesn’t think twice about accepting the word of the cops over the VICTIMS in spite of proof.
BTW, Christy also references a video that she says “proves that she was lowered in a slow controlled manner to the floor”. As far as I know, THIS would have to be on the ’non-existent’ beginning of the strip video.
On May 5th when I asked about the “missing” video, I was told it would soon be released.
Now here again it looks as though it’s referenced…even though they NOW claim it does not exist.
Interesting. (I have filed a request for this video.)

This isn’t so much an investigation report as it is a smear campaign against Hope Steffey.

The cops can polish this turd as much as want, this STILL STINKS!

BTW I don’t know why they bothered to black out the names of Nurse Coren Lennon and the jail psychologist Thomas Anuszkiewicz, aren’t they PROUD of the work they do?

Thank you, I didn’t mean to sound harsh. I actually think that you are a very good author and have created very real and interesting characters. I also think that your point is an important one, just not as well fleshed out as it could have been. If you are writing a series, then these issues can be easily clarified in your follow up novel. I really do hope that you continue writing, you show a lot of promise.

Thanks for you comments, Ravenskya. That is a valid criticism. I thought I had addressed those issues in the prologue, but I guess not in enough detail to satisfy your tastes.

Actually, since you brought me into it. The issue is that nowhere in your book did you enlighten anyone on any steps that the characters had taken prior to the current ones. It is not an issue of my not believing that these things occur every day through out the country, its that in the writing of your book you failed to enlighten the reader on the truely hopeless situation that the characters were in before they began taking these steps. You may say that “It’s a little known fact that” the cheif hates the feds, but that fact does your readers no good to state it afterward on a blog. Your book would have been far more effective had you actually shown the readers the things that you bring up in this post. As it currently reads to someone picking the book up off the shelf, these characters are reacting in a way that uneducated college students on a mission would react to things. You set the scene in a small town with a racist and bigoted sheriff who is abusing his power. Okay, I can buy that. Just as an FYI, the town I live in is on our third sheriff now because the other two were given the boot for political corruption. The thing is that there are powers above a small town sheriff that you never mentioned any of these people going to about the issue. In your mind they may have been way beyond that - but in your book you did not show it to the reader.

My review was on your book as a stand alone book, not as an addition to your blog, and not as a part of a series. Perhaps these issues will be addressed in your follow up book. I do believe that you have talent as a writer, I just think that as it stands, your arguments as made in the book don’t hold water.

Thanks for the comments, everyone. (I’ve been sick the past few days, so sorry for not replying sooner.)

Joy, that is the pattern, though don’t expect that pattern to remain exactly the same. After 3 years, the theme quote changes to “The problem isn’t the abuse of power. It is the power to abuse.” (Michael Cloud)

suddenly i’m very hungry for orange pie. and i’d ever heard of such a thing half an hour ago. what a cool characterization. i will remember Clyde for a long time because of that orange pie and the description of her first attempt to make one.

i love that it was a smart, canny, and gutsy woman who saved the day.

if this were a real TV show, i’d tune in again. especially if the pattern was a regular exposing of abuse of power and the humbling of the arrogant.

Hi, all. How did you like episode 1? More to the point, would you offer me a short testimonial? Just a sentence or two, that’s all. Just a few words describing what you thought, and permission for me to quote you. You can leave a comment below, or click here to email me.

Or better even yet, why not write a review on your own blog? Whatever the case, thank you for your support. I sincerely appreciate it.

Thanks, everyone, so much for your comments.

Seanachi, Gabriele: This may just be a matter of taste. I assume you’re talking about the “Logging to pyx.log…” part. One of my pet peeves is action flicks and stories that have unrealistically simplified technology. So the spy breaks into the computer room, puts a blank disc into the computer’s drive, clicks a few buttons, and then a nice big display fills the screen: “Downloading data…” with a progress bar that slowly fills to the right. All the while, the bad guys are getting closer and closer. Yeah right. My problem is that computers don’t actually work that way. The important parts of the above, of course, are “Found hole… Administrator access… Attached to EXPLORER…”

BTW, a bit of high-tech trivia: The IP address 172.27.201.183 is like one of the “555” phone numbers you see on TV shows, because it’s guaranteed never to point to a real computer connected directly to the Internet. If you have a cable router, you may have seen the 192.168. series of IP addresses, which most cable routers use, because they are safe for you to use on your own network. IP addresses between 172.16. and 172.31. are also safe, but lesser known. (The third group of private-network addresses are the ones beginning with 10.)

Joy: I’m so glad you’re enjoying the story.

Joely, Ann, Crystal: She didn’t really have an opportunity at this point to read anything, just to notice that stuff was coming in. If she had examined it more closely, she wouldn’t have found much of anything interesting. Not yet, anyhow…

Cheryl, Crystal: Ugh. Another of my pet peeves is when I’m reading dialogue and can’t figure out who is saying what. So in my own writing, I try to provide sufficient clues, context, and tags, but I obviously don’t always succeed. Part of the problem, as you know, is when you’re writing it, you hear the actual voices of the characters in your head. And so it’s easy for you to keep them straight. Plus, Ted would never say something like, “Fleecing them pretty good, I hope.” So it’s easy for me to remember that Michael must be saying that. The other part of the problem is that for now, I don’t have a copyeditor to help me prevent such problems.

Crystal: Your first comment got marked as spam, incorrectly, and I don’t know why. But I corrected the spam filter. Hopefully, it will learn from its mistake.

Weird I posted my comment but it didn’t show…not sure if you need to approve or not? If it just got lost, basically I was agreeing with Cheryl on the tagless dialogue. I’ve noticed this in some of the other chapters as well, a few of which have much longer dialogue sections which become confusing. Intersperse the dialogue with a few more tags, and gives us a bit more insight as to the action that is happening at the time. What are the characters doing as they speak? Thinking? Too much back and forth on the page without more information about the scene around the characters tends to end up feeling a bit flat.

I’m interested to see what Clyde knows too!

I agree with Cheryl on the tagless dialogue. I noticed this particularly in one of your previous snippets which was nearly all dialogue (but was so long that I didn’t get a chance to finish reading to comment at the time, sorry!). I wanted a bit more broken up—some action happening in between, a bit more insight to the emotions and what the characters were doing while they spoke. In this snippet it was primarily in the first part—the later dialogue handles that a bit better.

Very interested to find out what Clyde knows!

Nice. The tagless dialogue was a bit confusing, though. It went on too long without identifying the speaker once in awhile. That keeps the reader on track, and also has the added bonus of breaking up all that white space surrounding the dialogue. The thing about reading is that it’s _visual_ , too.
